My Bio

Victor Sims is a community-rooted leader running for Polk County School Board, District 3 — and his story isn’t your typical candidate narrative.

Growing up in foster care in Polk County, Victor moved through 12 different schools, learning early on what stability, support, and belonging really mean. For most of those years, he says, no one truly saw him — until his mother did. That experience shapes how he shows up: curious about every student’s potential, relentless about ensuring every child feels seen, and committed to building systems that help families thrive.

Victor’s connection to education isn’t abstract. He attended Eagle Lake Elementary, where his mother, a Head Start teacher, worked every day to give kids a strong start — even as the school struggled to reach its potential. That personal experience fuels his belief that every school can be great with the right leadership and community partnership.

Professionally, Victor brings a mix of legal and strategic experience. He holds a Juris Master’s degree, supports an $11 million portfolio in his current role, and has led initiatives on both child welfare and ethical uses of technology. He’s not afraid to tackle complicated problems — especially when they affect children and families.

Victor also lives what he believes. He’s been deeply involved in his community: from supporting local youth fundraising efforts, convening conversations on race and equity, to helping launch the first LGBTQ group home in Texas to protect vulnerable kids from discrimination.

At his core, Victor is running because he’s curious about how systems can work better — not just for some, but for every child in Polk County. He wants schools to be places where educators are supported, families are partners, and students are both seen and encouraged to thrive.

My Key Issues

Mental Health

Increase availability of school counselors or therapists: Push for funding or partnerships to bring more mental health professionals into schools.

Education

Providing extra funds to grow the local headstart programming. So more students are able to get a head start.

Education

Support working families: They offer a reliable place for children to go after school, easing the burden on families who may be juggling work and caregiving responsibilities. Enhance academic achievement: Many programs offer tutoring, homework help, or enrichment activities that reinforce what kids learn during the school day. Promote social-emotional growth: After-school programs help build critical life skills, such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving, while fostering positive relationships with peers and mentors. Prevent risky behaviors: They keep children engaged and supervised during hours when they might otherwise be unsupervised, reducing the likelihood of involvement in risky activities.
